The Basics

Like all music producers, each individual engineer has specific strengths that makes artists' attracted to their services. For example if you are more fond of Hip-Hop and R&B, then you will probably have an ear for what sounds good in that style of music. Playing an instrument and or having the knowledge of basic music theory will help increase your ability to produce great sounding music.

So the question is, what is my preferable style of music? Well here is a list of various styles that are good to learn and explore new ideas as music producer:

So the next question is, how do I get familiar with these styles of music?
The answer is simple. Listen, listen, listen. The only way to have a distinguished ear for a certain style of music is if you listen to various bands and try to recreate the sound they lavish with your own personal style on it.
